Wednesday 4/22 Update

April 22, 2020
By PJP II High School

Dear PJP Senior Parents,

Congratulations!!!! Today was the last day of classes for your SENIOR son or daughter!

I want to thank you for a job well done! You have made many sacrifices, and if you are like me, when my children finished high school, it was bittersweet. We are sad to see our child grow up. Where has the time gone? It happens so fast. It is sweet because we are proud of all they accomplished and looking forward to the promise of the future.

On behalf of the faculty and staff, we share in your bittersweet memories. We have loved your children and are proud of the young men and women they have become.

Our prayers and blessing go with all of you in the new chapters that have begun on this day.

"It is above all in raising children that the family fulfills its mission to proclaim the Gospel of life."  St. PJP II

Our prayers are with you.

God bless,

Douglas Triche

Monday 4/20 Update

April 20, 2020
By PJP II High School

Dear Jaguar Family,

“As the family goes, so goes the nation, and so goes the whole world in which we live.” St. Pope John Paul II

While COVID-19 presents many challenges, one challenge is also an opportunity for families.  It is the opportunity to reach out and connect to one another in a deeper way.   St. PJP II often called each of us to not be afraid and put out into the deep for a catch.  The catch he had in mind was each other’s hearts.  We may often fail to do so but each time we can chose again. God’s mercy is never-ending.

In conjunction with Archbishop Aymond, very soon we will announce plans on how and when we will conclude the end of the school year.  For now, I would like to give directions for completing and turning in PJP Service Hours.  It gives students a way to be recognized for their contributions at home and doing their part for catching hearts.

  1. The requirement to earn half of the required service hours at a church was eliminated in March. That means that 8th graders can earn all 20 of their hours, and 9th-11th graders can earn all 30 of their hours as community hours working at home with family responsibilities that are not connected to a for-profit organization or family business. Parents can sign for hours earned this way. (Please note: students are still required to earn the full amount of service hours, but all remaining hours can be earned at home. This change was made to help parents motivate their students to contribute to household responsibilities, such as chores and babysitting younger siblings, in a concentrated way during this time of quarantine and sheltering-in-place.)
  2. The due date for service hours is still Friday, May 1, 2020. Instead of turning in the form in person, students will need to take two pictures, one of the front and one of the back, of their service hour log. They will then insert these pictures into a document and upload the document to their Theology Teacher’s Google Classroom before midnight. A special assignment will be created in Mr. Bourgeois, Mr. Chapman, and Mr. Lacourrege Google Classrooms specifically for submitting service hour logs.
  3. Normally, completion of service hour logs is a requirement in order to take the 2nd-semester theology exam. Instead, service hours will count as the only Campus Ministry (of “Mass Grade”) for the 4th quarter. That means that service hours are now worth 10% of the 4th quarter theology grade in every theology class.
  4. Final Note: Please do NOT submit service hours by coming to school or emailing them. We cannot guarantee that someone will be at PJP to receive your hours or be able to get them to Mr. Lacourrege in time. Also, our PJP email server will not be able to support all of the picture files emailed all at the same time. Please submit your document with your service hour log pictures on Google Classroom only. If you have already turned in your log to Mr. Lacourrege, you do not need to submit it again. If you turned in your service hours to someone else, please email Mr. Lacourrege to make certain that he has received them.

Thank you for your cooperation and support. Let’s complete the year Jaguar Strong!

God bless,

Douglas Triche

Thursday 4/9 Update

April 09, 2020
By PJP II High School

Dear PJPII Community,

Family is always important when facing tough times. Students, parents, and teachers always tell me that what sets our school community apart from others is that we are a family. Families take care of each other. We have a rich, faith-filled history of helping other family members in need - it’s just who we are.

In 40 years of history, we have never experienced a situation like the COVID-19 Pandemic. It’s a challenge. We are doing the hard work: social-distancing, on-line classes, staying home, and sheltering-in-place. The most difficult challenge for some of our families may be what lies ahead.

It’s always about our students, as far as the Administration, Faculty, and Staff of PJPII is concerned. Our Mission is to provide a Christ-centered educational environment in the Roman Catholic tradition that promotes academic excellence, nurtures faith development, and fosters leadership among its students. We want to ensure EVERY PJPII STUDENT can return to Pope John Paul II High School next year. We are asking our PJPII Family for help.

Our family needs your time, talent, or treasure to increase the Tuition Assistance Fund for the 2020-2021 school year. You can help keep our PJPII Family strong and enduring in our Vision for the future!

How can you help?

Pray for the PJP Family in this time of need (email Sherri Dutreix sdutreix@pjp.org to be part of the Prayer Team)

Volunteer your time. Be a Social Media Ambassador: share our posts and/or start a Peer-to-Peer fundraiser on iGive Catholic (email Pam Lisotta plisotta@pjp.org for more info)

Donate, big or small; your gift will make a difference for someone’s son or daughter! (iGive Catholic for PJP)

We know these are uncertain times. We also know God is in control. Strengthen your faith, strengthen your family, and strengthen the PJPII Family. We are not alone. We are stronger together!

Yours in Christ,

Douglas V. Triche

By PJP II High School

Dear Jaguar Family,

A quote for Palm Sunday:

No pain, no palm; no thorns, no throne; no gall, no glory; no cross, no crown. William Penn

I pray you are blessed this Palm Sunday and that you and your family are well.

Here are several important announcements concerning Zoom class sessions.  Some concern a safe environment, and some concern appropriate behavior of students during Zoom classes.

Teachers have been reminded about the following policies concerning Zoom class sessions: TEACHER WILL....

ADMIT ONE STUDENT AT A TIME

ONLY ADMIT STUDENTS THAT USE THEIR FIRST AND LAST NAME

CONFIRM THAT THE NAME BEING ADMITTING IS THE STUDENT SEEN IN THE VIDEO PICTURE

CHECK STUDENT OFF ON THE ROLL BEFORE GOING TO THE NEXT STUDENT TO ADMIT

STUDENTS THAT DO NOT FOLLOW POLICY MAY NOT BE ADMITTED TO JOIN THE CLASS AND MAY LOSE POINTS ASSOCIATED WITH THE CLASS

If a student does not get admitted to a class due to technical difficulties or any other reason, he or she should email the teacher right away and copy Ms. Bremond and/or the I.T. staff, Ms. Blocker

If a student is distracting during a zoom session, he or she can be removed by the teacher from the Zoom class.  The student will be given a warning the first time through an email to the student and parent warning that a repeat offense can mean being suspended for the next class with the loss of points.  Ms. Taylor will be in touch with students and parents if suspended from a class.

Students MUST leave their video camera on during the entire class.

HAVE A BLESSED HOLY WEEK!

NOTE: Fr. Pat will have Mass in the Chapel on Tuesday of Holy Week at 11:15 via live steam and/or recording.  Classes meeting at 10:30 are asked to stop by 11:15 to allow all who want to participate in the live stream, the ability to do so.

God bless

By PJP II High School

Dear Jaguar Family,

“There is no evil to be faced that Christ does not face with us. There is no enemy that Christ has not already conquered. There is no cross to bear that Christ has not already borne for us, and does not now bear with us."  St. Pope John Paul II

No new announcements today.  I thought I would leave with you a YouTube video of John Wooden.  He is a great teacher who coach UCLA basketball team to 10 national championships.

Tuesday 3/31 Update

March 31, 2020
By PJP II High School

Dear Jaguar Family,

Dear Companions on the Journey,

"The sickness of a family member, friend, or neighbor is a call to Christians to demonstrate true compassion, that gentle and persevering sharing in another's pain."  St. Pope John Paul II

As the cases and the death toll of the coronavirus increases, so to our compassion and sense of understanding must also increase.  Let us pray that we continue to reach out to one another in our hour of need.

Note:

Dr. RaeNell Houston, our Archdiocese of New Orleans Catholic School Superintendent, asked me to pass on her deep sense of gratitude and appreciation for the heroic effort teachers, students, and parents have made during this time of crisis in our community.

School Office:  Due to the pandemic, the school office is only open with an appointment.  Most staff are working from home.  The office phone will be answered between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. through the call forward feature.

NO OFFICIAL WORD YET ON SHELTER IN PLACE EXTENSION.  PJP is making plans in the event that the Governor makes such an announcement.  Please stay tuned.

SENIOR last class day will take place no later than April 22.  IF PJP is still doing Zoom classes, the last class for SENIORs will be G period on April 22.  SENIORS ONLY

Senior Disney Trip is officially canceled.  It will take time for Disney, the hotel, and the bus company to process the refunds.  Please be patient.

SAFE ENVIRONMENT on ZOOM: Students MUST clearly identify themselves upon entering a zoom class session by putting their FIRST AND LAST NAME. Teachers have been asked to only admit students with first and last names.

I agree with the Superintendent; you are all heroes for the great effort you have put into the continuation of your schooling during this trying time in our history.

God bless

Dear Jaguar Family,

"I plead with you -- Never, ever give up on hope, never doubt, never tire, and never become discouraged.  Be not afraid."  Pope John Paul II

I do not have any new news today, but I want to share with everyone an article that was sent to me today.  As I told the seniors today, "It is through great challenges that greatness is revealed."  Our namesake compels each of us to look beyond the adversity we face.  To do so is to be on our Lenten journey.

I hope you enjoy and find the following article a good Lenten companion.

John Paul II's Guide to Prudence During a Pandemic

Wednesday 3/25 Update

March 25, 2020
By PJP II High School

Dear Jaguar Family,

"The human being is single, unique, and unrepeatable, someone thought of and chosen from eternity, someone called and identified by name."  Pope John Paul II

PJP II's statement above reminds us why we go the extra mile for our children.  God has given us unique gifts to mold into future saints, saints that give us hope for a better world.

Notes:

Schedule for Wednesday, March 25:

G period - 9 a.m.

A period - 10:30 a.m.

B period - 1 p.m.

Thank you for the positive response to my last email.  Also, thank you for your patience and support as we navigate these uncharted waters.  We are all learning how to best serve our community during these difficult times.

Contact Congress: Please read the following letter that was sent to me from the Office of Catholic Schools.  Also, please consider taking action; doing so will help our students and our families.

Contact Congress on COVID-19 Relief

March 24, 2020

Dear Friends of Religious and Independent Schools,

The US Senate is currently considering a coronavirus relief package that includes aid to K-12 schools.  Currently, there is language in the legislation allowing non-public schools to receive relief. However, it appears that some are attempting to remove this language.

Please use CAPE's Legislative Action Center to urge senators to make sure that private schools are not excluded from Congress' COVID-19 relief package.

Thank you for your help.

Sincerely,

Michael Schuttloffel

My prayers continue to be with each of you to remain safe and well.

God bless

Tuesday 3/24 Update

March 24, 2020
By PJP II High School

Dear Jaguar Family,

"Life is entrusted to man as a treasure which must not be squandered, as a talent which must be used well."  Pope John Paul II

Our students are the treasure that Pope John Paul II asked us to make into saints.  To be a saint means to be intentional about doing all things for the glory of God and the greater good.  We give glory to God in our families, workplace, civic settings, and in our social gatherings.  As the holy man once said, "Always proclaim the goodness of God.  Only use words when necessary."

Special Notes:

Third-quarter report cards will go out tomorrow evening, Tuesday, March 24.

If you miss or misplace my email, we will begin posting email updates on the school website.

Safe Environment: It is the norm for online high school classes to take place in an open room in the home and not in a private space, such as behind closed doors in a bedroom.  A STUDENT MUST NOT BE IN THEIR BED DURING AN ONLINE CLASS.  Parents should always be able to monitor internet use whenever possible.  Teachers are asked to record all Zoom class sessions.  You can access a recording by using the student login to Google Classroom.

Thank you for your cooperation and support of the PJP mission.

God bless

Monday 3/23 Update

March 23, 2020
By PJP II High School

Dear Companions on the Journey,

"From now on, it is only through a conscious choice, and through a deliberate policy that humanity can survive."  (Pope John Paul II) These words were spoken in a different time, but they continue to be true today.  Thank you to all students who have taken these words to heart in their daily decisions.  I have received plenty of good reports of how well most students are doing with the Zoom classes.

We are in solidarity with our brother and sister Catholic schools in the Archdiocese of New Orleans.  In the context of our Catholic school community, our Covid-19 student home learning plan is very appropriate and on target to the needs of our community.  I ask all students to continue to dedicate yourselves to your studies.  We are counting on you to take our places and leading us to a better day that reflects the spirit of Christ.

Important notes:

Monday's Classes:

A period: 9 a.m.

B period: 10:30 a.m.

E period: 1 a.m.

PJP School Office Hours:  Due to the seriousness of the pandemic, the school office will only be open by appointment. The school office phone will be answered between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. Monday through Friday.  Secretaries and administrators will work remotely from home.

Mr. Ducre and his staff have been working hard to sanitize the school.  I am grateful for all of their efforts.

Best practice of Zoom class learning: It has been helpful to use the chat feature to have students respond to classroom discussion or formative assessment.  Session chats are printable after the session, and it keeps students engaged in the session.  I also found Padlet very helpful.

I recommend parents to look in on their son's/daughter's Google Classroom by signing in with the student email and password.

For our spiritual needs, Daily Mass link: https://thedailymass.com/

Service Hours:

In light of recent events, the administration of Pope John Paul II Catholic High School and the Theology Department has made the following change to the 2019-2020 Service Hour Policy:

For this school year only, the requirement that underclassmen earn at least 15 service hours at a church is hereby removed. Additionally, from March 20th onward, students may earn service hours at home for family chores and for fulfilling family responsibilities, which are not connected with a for-profit organization or business. Parents and guardians may sign for these service hours on the service hour log sheet.

Seniors who have not yet turned in their service hours to Mr. Lacourrege should contact him ASAP so that arrangements can be made.

IMPORTANT: At this time, we are discouraging PJP students from seeking to earn any new church service hours until such time as school re-opens.

NOTE: These changes are made based on the current situation. Please stay in communication with PJP in case any further changes to the service hour policy are needed.

Let join together in prayer to see us through this time of global crisis.

Please know that each of you are in my daily prayers.

God bless

Thursday 3/19 Update

March 19, 2020
By PJP II High School

Thank you, Jaguar students and teachers for a job well done today!  We experience very few problems, and many reported a very positive experience.   I am sure St. John Paul II in heaven is very proud of all of you.

Learning to think rigorously, so as to act rightly and to serve humanity better."  Pope John Paul II

Another great saying I have learned in the last year or so, "Thank God almighty, .... I'm a Jaguar!"  It's another way of saying, "It takes a little more to be a Jaguar."  Serving humanity better is why JP II implored the Christian community, "Do not be satisfied with mediocrity."

Notes:

Round II Tomorrow:

C Period: 9:00 a.m.

D Period: 10:30 a.m.

E period: 1:00 p.m.

If any student needs help with their PJP email password, they must contact Ms. Blocker for assistance (cblocker@pjp.org).  Using private email is prohibited.

The administration is directing students to be on their own during Zoom sessions.  Teachers giving a quiz, test, or independent assignments can require students to do makeup work if students are found to be in groups during Zoom sessions when independent work is required.

I have started a Facebook Miracle Post page.  Please check it out and follow: Miracle Post

Thank you again for a job well done!
