Catholic Christian Values and Identity Standards

Standard 1: Pursue a way of life that demonstrates an active relationship with God as persons formed in the Catholic faith community and tradition.

Category: Prayer and Spirituality

Benchmarks:
A. Create, analyze, and practice a variety of formal and informal personal and communal prayer.
B. Model an awareness of God’s presence in all creation.
C. Discern God’s will in accordance with Catholic tradition and teachings.
D. Evaluate everything in life in light of the Catholic faith.

Standard 2: Strive to make informed moral decisions based on the Catholic interpretation of gospel teaching.

Category: Personal Morality

Benchmarks:
A. Demonstrate the ability to make moral decisions in daily life based on the Catholic interpretation of Gospel morality.
B. Explain and apply the Catholic Church’s process for formation of conscience.
C. Exhibit personal responsibility for integrity and respect in interpersonal relationships.

Standard 3: Show respect and concern for self, others and for all of God's creation.

Category: Stewardship

Benchmarks:
A. Demonstrate knowledge of self as a unique gift from God.
B. Model habits of Christ-like behavior, as proclaimed in the gospels, in their treatment of self and others.
C. Show concern for all God’s creation through involvement in community service.
D. Demonstrate care for all elements of God’s creation.

Standard 4: Exemplify caring family membership as persons formed in the Catholic faith community.

Category: Family Life

Benchmarks:
A. Demonstrate loving and respectful language and behavior skills in relating to others, especially family members.
B. Demonstrate an understanding of and commitment to the Catholic Church’s teaching on human intimacy and sexuality.
C. Initiate and participate in family and communal prayer.
D. Live their faith life within the context of their families and society in general.
E. Promote protection and respect for family life by reflecting on how cultural and societal trends, developments and events may impact the family unit.

Standard 5: Demonstrate responsible citizenship based on Catholic social teaching.

Category: Social Morality

Benchmarks:
A. Promote respect for human life and dignity in all its manifestations and at all its stages of development.
B. Contribute to the common good through work and service which benefit society and foster pride in work as well as the dignity of workers.
C. Serve those who are poor, vulnerable and exploited by addressing their needs and promoting social change.
D. Recognize and affirm equality, democracy, diversity and interdependence among the world’s peoples and cultures.

Standard 6: Pursue excellence in all endeavors through self-directed, ongoing learning and achievement from a Catholic holistic perspective.

Category: Life-long Learning

Benchmarks:
A. Set explicit, long-term goals; e.g., academic, career, spiritual.
B. Develop skills necessary for life long learning.
C. Model essential virtues necessary to achieve a Christ-like character.
D. Practice the pursuit of knowledge as an ongoing part of personal development.
