Cheerleaders Pep It Up!
by Calvin Durel, Lonnie
Dutreix, Sam Schmitt, Kale Scheuermann, Frazier Bridges,
Niky DiCarlo, Wade Saucier, Logan Kadinger
Last
week, the Cheerleaders put on a fall sports pep rally,
and made preparations for Homecoming. They painted signs
and prepared a dance for the pep rally. They made
decisions for Homecoming, including chosing the theme.
The Homecoming Pep Rally is the responsibility of the
Varsity cheerleaders, which requires a great deal of
work. When asked about the cheerleaders’ goal this year
Mrs. Doucet, cheerleading moderator, was reported as
saying, “My main goal is for them to be more than just
performers; I want them to be spirit-leaders. We also
want people to get excited about being a Jaguar.”

The fall sports pep rally was a huge
success. The cheerleaders executed their performances to
perfection, and the rest went off without a hitch.
Congratulations to the cheerleaders on this week’s
success, and good luck in weeks to come.

On
Friday, August 27, 2010, the Pope John Paul II Catholic
High School Jaguars headed to the Isidore Newman School
football jamboree in New Orleans, Louisiana. The Jaguars
played the Lakeshore Titans of Mandeville, Louisiana.
The game began at 6 p.m. and the teams played a pair of
15 minute quarters. In the first half of the game, the
Titans scored a touchdown but missed the extra point,
leaving the score 6-0. When halftime was over, the
players hustled back onto the field. Although the second
half of the game was looking better, Lakeshore scored
another touchdown. This time, the extra point was good,
making the score 13-0. The game ended in a loss for Pope
John Paul II Catholic High School. Although this was a
tough loss, it will prepare them for a great season
ahead.

Volleyball season officially begins
Monday August 30th. The team has been working hard all
summer, and has continued to practice every day after
school. A typical practice consists of passing, hitting,
conditioning, and serving drills. The team hopes this
season will be successful, and that they make it to the
playoffs. Kristin Calamari is a member of the junior
varsity team. She played volleyball at her previous
school, but says she enjoys the PJP team better because
she feels that it is more organized. Kristin plays the
position of the setter, which is also her favorite
position. Team captains Jess Gross and Miranda Levy both
say that there goal this year is to make it to state,
and that the team has a lot of potential. Miranda and
Jess cannot wait to see how the season will turn out,
but they are sad to be leaving next year.

each other. The scrimmage was very successful and was
great preparation for the Jaguar football team. This
Friday night, August 27, the Jags will be facing off
against the Lakeshore Titans at the Newman Jamboree.
This game will be followed by the start of their season
Next Friday, September 3, against the St. Patrick Irish

The Lady Jags Basketball Team sponsored the Back to
School dance on Friday, August 20th, 2010 in
the Pope John Paul II Catholic High School Gym. They
were raising money for shooting shirts. The theme of the
dance was “Back to the Woods” and people wore either
camouflage or casual attire. Spirit points were awarded
based on attendance from each class level. The DJ played
a variety of music and everyone had a good time dancing
and being with their friends. Gina Cartaginese stated
“The Back to School dance was unforgettable. It was the
best dance I’ve ever attended at Pope.” Everyone had a
great time and they are looking forward to the rest of
the dances this year.

Jaguar Moms'
Football Clinic
The Pope John Paul II
football staff hosted their annual Football Clinic for
Moms on Monday, August 16. Head coach Mark Jeanmard and
his staff welcomed the mothers of the Jaguar football
team to an evening designed to help them understand and
experience what their sons go through while playing
football. The program opened with a pot luck supper put
together by the moms. After opening remarks by Coach
Jeanmard, the moms went into the gym, where Coach Wayne
Frederickson taught them the warm up and stretching
drills used by the varsity. Defensive coordinator Joe
Schiro then explained the Jaguar defensive scheme and
had the each mother line up at her son’s position and
execute several stunts and blitzes. Coach Jeanmard then
explained the Jaguar offense, showed the moms how to
line up and ran several plays. The session ended with a
question and answer period.
