ELECTIVE COURSES FOR 2011-2012

Advanced Theater - students further explore the world of the performing arts with a concentration on dramatic performance. The class will also include an introduction to film making. Students may take more than one year of Advanced Theater. (Prerequisite: Completion of Theater I)

Applied Music - a performance-based class, this course requires that students have their own instrument and any equipment needed (i.e. amplifiers) and be proficient in performing all types of music. Additionally, class members will perform during Mass and Prayer Services throughout the school year as instrumentalists or vocalists. The ability to read music or chords is required of all instrumentalists and vocalists and must be demonstrated to the teacher prior to final acceptance into this course. Students may take more than one year of Applied Music.

Art I- an introduction to studio art: working on projects in drawing with perspective, balance and design; color using water colors, colored pencils and pastels; 3D art using clay; sketchbook is maintained and graded 2 or 3 times a semester.

Art II- same as Art I except the projects are more in-depth; sketchbook also required.

Art III- student works primarily on their own portfolio (a body of artwork) through advanced projects in drawing, painting, design, and sculpture. Students must receive approval from their art teacher.

Biology II Anatomy and Physiology (H) - is an in-depth study of the human body and how it works. All body systems will be studied and knowledge will be applied through detailed mammalian dissection. The course involves the application of these principles to the fields of public health, nutrition, and medicine. This course is meant to prepare a student for a basic college Anatomy and Physiology course. Students electing to take this course are required to dissect. (Prerequisite: Completion of Biology I (H) and Chemistry I).

Chem II (H) - A continuation of Chemistry I (H). This course will pick up where Chemistry I (H) left off. Students will gain a broader knowledge of how atoms and molecules interact using problem solving and chemical calculations. This course will include laboratory work. (Prerequisite: Chemistry I (H))

Criminal Law (1/2) - the study of the branch of law which labels certain harmful behaviors as crimes, forbids such behaviors, and provides for the punishment of people who engage in those behaviors. The study of criminal laws and what happens when they are violated will be as complex as it is interesting. Special attention will be given to criminal definitions and defenses, our rights within the criminal justice system, criminal investigations, the trial process and punishments within the United States.

Economics (1/2)- a study of the American economic system and how it affects us as individuals.

English V (H)- reading and study of classics as well as contemporary novels, oral presentations, vocabulary enrichment; exploration of the creative writing process. Students are required to use correct grammar learned throughout their school years and adapt it to creative expression through writing about a variety of topics. This course is required for all seniors who have completed the English sequence of courses from English I through English IV, but may be taken concurrently with English IV with teacher's approval.

Holocaust (1/2) - study of Jewish life in Europe before, during, and after the Holocaust. Majority of time will be spent on Jewish life in Europe from 1933-1945.

Psychology (1/2) - the study of human behavior and mental processes - what we think, feel and do and the reasons why. A study of psychological theories can help us understand the complexities of our behavior as well as that of others who affect our lives. Psychology is a study which is full of controversial theories and treatments, but it is also one which is interesting and relevant to each of our lives.

Publications I-covers the writing and production of print and internet material for Pope John Paul High School. Students in the class are responsible for producing the Jaguar Journal newspaper, the yearbook (print and video versions), and weekly articles for the school web page. Students are also assigned a newsbeat on which they are required to report weekly, and a quarterly photojournalism assignment. Each class includes a writing assignment. Instruction will concentrate on publication guidelines, interview techniques, vocabulary development, diverse writing skills, photography, and page layouts. Writings will include straight and soft news, editorials, features, entertainment, and sports. Students should have a good command of written English and will be required to attend some after-school activities and workshops.

Publications II-is an advanced version of Publications I. Students will be expected to take a leadership role in the production of the materials described in the Publications I course and demonstrate a proficiency in the required skills. Teacher recommendation is required.

Seven Global Revolutions H (1/2): is based on the Seven Revolutions (7Revs) initiative of the Global Strategy Institute (GSI, http://gsi.csis.org/ ). The following are "the seven areas of change expected to be most ‘revolutionary'" over the next fifteen years: population, resource management, technology, information, economic integration, conflict, and governance. Through the course, students will study the seven areas of change, will begin to develop their own ideas about how they can impact their world, and will adopt global perspectives in examining the critical issues currently facing our world.

Speech- course is designed to help the student understand the communications process in order to speak more effectively in public. The student will learn to prepare and deliver informative, demonstrative, and persuasive speeches as well as participate in group discussions and debate. Speaking for radio and TV will be introduced, as well as the preparation and carrying out of a successful job interview.

Teen Leadership (1/2): course is designed to develop teens into tomorrow's leaders through speaking, working with others, thinking differently and being far more creative than they ever thought. A student will be able to learn life-long leadership skills and principles for future success, and will face new situations in class that will build their self-confidence and ability to learn.

Theater I - introduces the student to the world of the performing arts: storytelling, oral interpretation, and dramatic performance. The histories of these three areas will be explored and the student will actively participate in the areas of the performing arts.
